Historian James Kunetka will discuss and sign copies of his new book “The General and the Genius” at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 13 at the Hans Bethe House, 1350 Bathtub Row, Los Alamos. The event is sponsored by the Los Alamos Historical Society. Kunetka will also discuss and sign his book at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 14 at the Barnes & Noble store in Coronado Shopping Center, Albuquerque. Both events are free and open to the public.

The book tells the story of the relationship of Gen. Leslie Groves, the director of the Manhattan Project, and physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, director of Los Alamos Laboratory, during the project.

The book is subtitled “Groves and Oppenheimer, the Unlikely Partnership That Built the Atom Bomb.” Kirkus Reviews says the book’s narrative “is often a fascinating look at one of the pivotal moments in both military and human history, and Kunetka deftly weaves together science, politics, and personal color to bring to life the extraordinary circumstances facing his subjects.”

Kunetka grew up in Albuquerque. A retired associate vice president at the University of Texas, he lives in Austin, Texas.
