Rachel Patty, a junior at Raton High School, is the New Mexico champion of the 2015 Poetry Out Loud National Recitation Contest.

Patty was one of 10 high school students – including four from Albuquerque – who competed Sunday, Feb. 22 in the state finals in Santa Fe.

Patty recited three poems – “The Jabberwocky” by Lewis Carroll, “Over and Under” by John Brehm and “The Speakers” by Weldon Kees.

She received $200, an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. to compete in the national finals. In addition, her school’s library received $500 to buy poetry books.

The national finals are April 28 and 29. The national champ receives $20,000 in prizes.

The program encourages youth to learn about great poems and promotes poetry in the classroom and in the community.
